The Alentejo occupies an area of 31,600 kms2 and has around 705,000 inhabitants.
The population density is low.

The Alentejo has a temperate climate with continental and Mediterranean characteristics. The summers are hot and dry, the winters wet and cold, and in spring and autumn, temperatures are delightful, with moderate highs and lows. The average low temperature in the coldest months, December and January, is 46ºF, with daytime temps around 60ºF. The average high in July and August, the hottest months, is 86ºF.

In winter, these averages include days with temperatures of 32ºF or even lower, and in the hottest summers, the mercury on occasion may climb above 100ºF. The daily temperature amplitude in the summer is significant, sometimes in the order of 59º– 68º.

In coastal areas, the temperatures and amplitudes are influenced by the sea. In winter, visitors need to wrap up warm and in summer, wear fresh, light clothing with a jacket for the evening. Sunglasses and good sunblock are essential.

The Alentejo is very well served by Lisbon’s International Airport, which is just an hour away from the region’s most important city, Évora.

The region has a highly qualified and diverse range of accommodations. Fantastic five and four-star hotels, many located in historical buildings with modern amenities.

There is also a wide range of manor houses, cottages and small boutique hotels. Another option is to sleep in convents, castles, palaces and monasteries, part of the Pousadas de Portugal network.
