Module 3

The Alentejo’s rich culinary heritage

Food and wine are essential parts of the Alentejo’s culture. Mealtime is special. It is when people come together to socialize and share the fruits of their labor.

Influenced by a Mediterranean climate and Roman and North African heritage, the Alentejo’s cuisine is rich in flavors and textures but also in history and tradition. Over the centuries, different people brought their knowledge and skills as they settled in the region. Some even brought ingredients from faraway lands, such as coriander which came from the East during the Age of Exploration.
