Culture and Heritage – Alentejo Academy

Academia de Marrocos

Module 1

Located in the south of Portugal, the gateway to Europe, the Alentejo region is often considered a time capsule. Here, the landscape is dominated by vast plains, cork oak forests, vineyards and olive groves as far as the eye can see.

The Alentejo is a unique antidote for the 21st century. It is a sustainable region with almost 7,000 years of human presence, where tradition is celebrated, and modernity embraced. To the west, the region is bathed by the Atlantic, with over 160 km of beaches – many of which are located in a Natural Park.

It is an ideal place for surfing. Inland there are treasures such as Évora – which will be the European Capital of Culture in 2027 – and Elvas, considered the most fortified city in Europe. Immersed in this environment, visitors can stay in elegant historical palaces, convents, and castles or in cosy farmsteads where they can enjoy delicious regional cuisine and wines.
